He had been planning and thinking about this night for a while. Had been thinking about her for even longer than that. Now that the time had arrived, Hawk had expected to feel unease, nervousness, but most of that was absent. Instead, he felt calm. Confident, even. Sure of himself, what he thought, and what he wanted.
As tempted as he had been, he hadn’t rehearsed his speech, wanting it instead to develop in the moment, to come from his heart. It hadn’t steered him wrong as of yet, and he trusted it now.
The ghost sat calmly, perched higher upon the mountain than he normally went. There were no trees here, just cold rock and darkness. For a time he simply watched, his gaze turned up toward the darkened sky, and the stars. Behind him was a small cave, inside of which was hidden a humble collection of blue and yellow flowers, carefully picked and stored there for this very moment. It had taken he and Maxem too long to find them, and he had taken even more care to store them. As was the way of things with this drought, the flowers were not pristine, not as he would’ve preferred. But they would do the job, as a symbolic gesture more than anything.
As stressful as life with the drought plaguing the lands had become, even that could not take away from what he felt. And he hoped it would not detract from what he hoped would be a special, memorable night - for he and Athena. Taking in a breath, he tipped his head back, and let out a short, summoning howl. He didn’t care who else in the Vertok pack heard it, although considering most of them were probably hiding in the caves further down in the forests, he doubted many were around to hear it. Many except for the one it was meant for. But for those that had, the summons was for only one.
Athena, I'd like to talk. Meet me on the mountain?

But you see, it's not me Athena had spent her day on patrols, paws aching from the constant pounding on the drying earth as her lungs burned. She had never found herself wishing for Winter so much until now, the heat was almost tempting her to venture back into the caves but every time she wandered close to them she couldn't force herself to go in, stomach churning at the idea of going there by herself. She knew there was no point in asking Maxem to go with her and when she looked for Hawk she hadn't been able to find him and for a moment she started to get nervous, thinking that maybe he was avoiding her, though she couldn't think of what she could have possibly done to scare him off.
She tried not to think too much of it as she wandered back to the den sit, glad for the cooling air of nightfall. The grey woman watched as a band of pups rushed past her, tumbling over each other as they shouted out and laughed, they were always so rambunctious, it made her smile a little. They were lucky, being able to run around so freely.
Athena was about to step into the caves when she heard a howl, recognizing the voice. Her ears pitched forward as she turned her head in the direction it came in, feeling her heart speed up, pounding in her rib cage. She lifted her muzzle, releasing a howl in response.
On my way.
It was simple and concise as she took off at a run, ears swiveling in the direction to go, following trails along the mountain when a familiar scent crossed her nose. Hawk. Her pace quickened as the scent grew closer until finally she spotted him, white pelt causing him to stand out among the rocks. She slowed her pace in an attempt to control her breathing as she approached him, hoping she didn't sound like she was struggling to breathe even though her chest felt like it was on fire.

A response came very quickly, which was pretty much as he’d expected. She was on her way. The excitement was almost impossible to contain. The ghost smiled to himself, and it felt like his heart was going to burst right out of his chest, so he took a few deep breaths to calm it. Hawk felt like he had been waiting so long for this moment, and in a way, he had. To find a mate and have a family had always been a dream of his, albeit one that had been pushed aside more often than not, in favor of focusing on his job or his duties.
Not a good excuse, in the grand scheme of things. Being a father and partaking in raising the next generation was easily the most important task of all in life, for every creature that walked the earth. Or at least, that was what he’d been raised to believe. The events of this night had the capacity to shift life for himself and Athena in a very different direction in the future. Provided it was a future she wanted for herself and wished to share with him.
He wasn’t sure how long he’d waited. It didn’t feel like very long before he heard her paws skidding across the rough rocks, sounding as though she were going at a rapid pace. Only as they made eye contact did she slow. Briefly, the knight was struck by how pretty she was, in the waning light of day, but his thoughts did not linger there long. Hawk frowned to himself a little, hoping she hadn’t thought his summons was urgent, or that he’d been in some sort of trouble.
Athena arrived before him clearly out of breath, and at once he stood, making his way to her side, a small smile upon his countenance. ”You didn’t have to run…” he teased softly, going for a slight head bump. ”But thank you, for coming. I have something for you, in here. It isn’t as nice as I’d like to give you, because of this drought.. so, I’m sorry about that,” he added on, gesturing with his nose toward the cave, before making his way toward it, trusting his companion to follow.
Padding a few steps into the cave, the ghost leaned over and gently nudged the small collection of flowers out from behind a rock and into the moonlight. Then, he moved back a pace or two, so the other could inspect the gift. The flowers had taken ages to find and it had taken even more care to preserve them, something he was sure Athena would understand. Hawk was more curious, however, to observe how she’d interpret the gift.

But you see, it's not me Of course he could tell that she was out of breath, Hawk was always observant and she felt a little embarrassed from her inability to control herself though the bump of his head against hers calmed her worries and caused a smile to slip over her lips. "I wasn't sure why you were calling me, so I wanted to be quick just incase it was dire." She told him with a tilt of her head. "Wait, you want to give me something? What have I done to deserve that?" She gave him a curious look before turning her attention to the cave.
For a moment she thought of her childhood, when her brother and father and lured her out with false promises only to try to take her life, the unease of the memories crept up her back until she reminded herself that this was the man she had trusted enough to venture into the caves with. She reminded herself that she was safe with this man. In her thoughts she hardly noticed that he had stepped into the cave and was moving something with his snout. The movement intrigued her to move closer, padding to his side in time to see the flowers come into view, her eyes widening.
"Wait," she said with a soft breath, "you...you got me flowers?" Her words were more of a statement than a question as she lowered her head, still able to scent the faint fragrance from the drying petals. "Oh Hawk...thank you." She said, turning to face him, the smile growing bigger on her face. She leaned in, giving him a gently into the fur of his neck to show her appreciation while her tail swung back and forth.

She had, it seemed, been worried about him initially. A confession that warmed the knight’s heart, especially given what he was about to confess, himself. It was the second part, though, that Hawk chose to focus on, given the faltering of her smile and the genuinely curious nature of the inquiry. What had she done to deserve a gift?
”You’ve been a wonderful, supportive blessing in my life. One that I.. appreciate, and that hope I never take for granted,” he answered, sitting back to observe. The wry grin he wore broadened as she stepped forth to study the gift.
A smile he thought was brighter than the sun, the moon, and all the stars was dancing across Athena’s countenance then. But before he could really appreciate it, she was pressing into his neck. The touch creating a wonderful warmth, something the ghost cherished and leant into, and he brought up a front limb to tentatively rest it across her shoulders.
”I know there’s a lot we don’t know about one another, Athena. I’d like to know more about you, whatever you want to share. These last weeks, though.. I’ve been thinkin’ a lot about the future. There are things I want. Like peace and prosperity for the pack, for my friends, and maybe someday, a family..” He paused for a breath, and to let the words sink in, especially the last one. Internally, the knight’s heart raced against his chest, so quickly he almost thought it was going to burst out. He'd thought and dreamt a lot about a moment like this, often. Of finding love, and having a family. That dream was now nearly a reality.
But he had to remind himself that Athena might not want the same things, and to be ready for that, if it were true. As such, he moved back and away from the embrace, as much as he didn’t want to, so that Athena could read his eyes and make a decision on what was to come next. ”I’d like to, and I want to share that life and future, with you, Athena. As partners.. mates. I offer myself to you, and only you, for the remainder of our lives. If you will have me.”
It was maybe the most consequential and potentially life-altering statement he’d ever spoken. Every single word of it was meant, and expressed with a sense hope. A part of him wished to continue, though, to assure his companion that she didn’t need to accept it. But, he told himself, she would know that. As he’d learned early on, Athena was not one to act without thought. Whatever choice she made, he trusted it to be what she wanted, too.

But you see, it's not me Athena couldn't bring herself to do more than just stare at Hawk as she spoke, feeling of disbelief, excitement, and even fear swirling inside her. She felt a warmth from him as he rested his leg across her shoulders, nearly sinking into his support, wanting nothing more than to forget her reservations and leap into this moment but her mind pulled her back, reminding her she had to know all angles before rushing head into him.
But even these thoughts couldn't stop the cold feeling that crept over her, filling the space between them when he pulled away. She was rooted in her spot as Hawk continued on, speaking about getting to know each other and eventually having a family.
A family. Was the the best candidate for that considering her own family's history? Her father and brother were traitors to the Vertok and she had worked hard to stay in the packs good graces but did that make her worthy of becoming a mother? Of bringing more lives into this complicated world?
Yes. The word answered for her before she could finish the sentence in her head. Her chest warmed with the thought of her own children, she adored pups but for so long didn't think herself worthy of anyone with the baggage she carried and yet...there was Hawk, telling her that she was the one he wanted. She was the one he wanted as a mate and mother of his pups.
"Oh," she breathed softly, trying to halt all the voices in her head and for a moment it worked. There was clarity behind her eyes as she brought her gaze to his, "of course I will have you."

Not for the first time, the ghost found himself wishing he had the ability if even for only a few moments, to look into Athena’s mind and know what she was thinking. The pretty, stony woman tended to mask her expressions and thoughts rather well. And while he was indeed curious, that mysterious aura about the smoky knight was also the part of her that’d drawn him in so much, initially.
Pragmatically, Hawk didn’t doubt that she’d be a good, devoted, strong parent, and a faithful partner. Those things were important, to a degree, but there was so much more to it than that. For as distant and reserved as Athena tended to portray herself to others, he’d been fortunate enough to see that different side of her. The fun, thoughtful, clever, caring side.. and that was equally as encapsulating. He’d genuinely enjoyed the time he’d spent with her, no matter the circumstances.. and wanted more of that.
And.. the feeling, it seemed, was mutual. Looking into her eyes just then, he could see the sincerity, the mutual desire there, too. Momentarily, the ghost found himself at a loss for words, and so chose to move forth and return to the embrace he’d broken a few moments ago.
”I love you, Athena.” Words he’d never thought he’d speak to anyone, in this way. All of those same, confusing, warm feelings came back with that touch, and the expression he spoke. Excitement, awe, incredulity. A part of him couldn’t believe the dream had come true. But here they were.

But you see, it's not me Athena felt like her heart was about to burst from her chest with Hawks admission. As a young girl she had thought about being 'saved' from her family by a dashing man but as she had grown older the dream had been replaced with reality and duty of her pack. She had resigned herself to a life of work and loneliness, of others keeping a polite distance from her but then there had come Maxem, limping into that small clearing with the support of a white furred man who she'd only seen from a distance and everything had changed. She had follow him into a cave after all.
"I love you too." The words flowed so easily, it was terrifying and exciting at the same time and she found herself relaxing into his embrace.
"You know," she said with a hint of laughter in her voice, "Maxem is going to take all the credit for bringing us together." She teased, she could practically see Maxem puffing up his chest and gloating about how he had brought them both happiness and it brought a smile to her face.

I love you too, she spoke, and in that brief moment, all felt right with the world. Everything seemed so far away - the pack, the drought, any worries about jobs and things not being done. He might’ve been content to stay like that forever, too, if it were possible. But it was not, and of course, it was Athena that reminded him of that.
The mention of their friend brought a wry grin to the ghost’s face, and he nodded in agreement. ”He did, for which I’ll be forever grateful. He helped with the flowers, too. Couldn’t have done it without him,” Hawk admitted, glancing to them. ”And I hope.. someday, I can do something like that for him, in return.”
There had to be something he could do, for the man who had not only introduced him to the treasure that was Athena, but also helped with this very moment. Though it certainly wasn’t the same, Hawk cared greatly for Maxem as well. Loved the other man, even, but more like a sibling, like the younger brother he’d always wanted. Hopefully, one day, he could repay their friend for all of the good he’d brought.

But you see, it's not me Athena couldn't help but smile as she thought of Maxem, leaning her head against Hawks shoulder as he talked about his hope of repaying him. "That would be lovely, for him to find someone he can share his life with," she said, a little worry crossing her face as she thought of how their pack often treated him, "he deserves more kindness than he gets and I'm sure deep down, he feels like he isn't one who deserves love." Her voice grew soft, hating how Maxem based his worth off of what the pack thought of him but, in the end, that's kind of how things were, for anyone in a pack, she just wished Maxem could see how thoughtful and kind he was and how that was valuable all on its own.
"I'll have to thank him for helping you, these flowers are amazing, I assume he climbed a tree to spot them?" She joked, knowing her friend enough that she figured he wouldn't be able to resist the chance to climb, she still couldn't understand how he could do it. The one time she had tried she had fallen and her tail had gotten stuck on a branch. She swore her tail would have snapped clean off if Maxem hadn't acted quickly and freed her. "Did he try to teach you?"

The status and state of their mutual friend was not something Hawk would ever not be a little bit concerned about, he thought. At least, not until things went through some drastic changes. Athena’s dislike for the situation as well was evident. ”He does deserve better. Many in this pack do.” The closer he looked, the more common a situation like Maxem’s seemed. Athena had experienced similar, and there were other loners as well. If only there were a way to change that…
Thankfully, though, the next two questions Athena asked broke that train of thought, reminding Hawk that this was supposed to be a happy moment. The ghost laughed a little as she more or less guessed what’d happened, and nodded. ”He did spot some of them from a tree, yeah. But I don’t think he meant to. And he did try to teach me, but in fairness, I did ask.”
Although.. he hadn’t meant for this to end up with them speaking more about their friend than themselves, it did provide an opportunity to bring up something else. Something the Knight had been considering, and that Athena - if she planned to be with him, should know. ”There’s something else I’ve been.. considering. And that is.. if the opportunity arises, I think I might try to be nominated, and run for one of the leadership roles. Maybe that way, we could change things for those in this pack, like Maxem, who feel forgotten and ignored.”
Their leaders were good, and maybe they could change things without him ever needing to do that. But in the event they couldn’t.. well. It was a call the ghost felt he wouldn’t be able to ignore forever. ”I.. wouldn’t expect you to run with me, if you didn’t want to. But.. I’d like to know you’re okay with me doing it. If you’re not, I wouldn’t. My first duty will always be to you and any family we may be blessed to have in the future.”
That was a hearty ask, but one that seemed better brought up now than later. Now, after all, was a time of discussion, to figure these things out.

But you see, it's not me Athena nodded in agreement, she thought that many pack mates did deserve better than to be cast about merely because of their ranks. Many pawns, in her opinion, held valuable skills that seemed to often be ignored or used without taking them seriously or being considered valuable.
"He tried to teach you..." Her thoughts were changed to the topic of climbing, a small smile crossing her maw, "please, tell me how it went." Her voice took on a teasing tone and she tried to picture serious Hawk scaling a tree but was glad to see that he didn't seem to have been harmed like she had in her attempt. Their conversation took another turn, circling back to Maxem but this turn was not something she had anticipated. She stayed quiet as he explained his thoughts but couldn't keep her eyes from widening ever so slightly at his plan.
Her gaze grew soft, knowing Hawk was coming from a good place in his heart, a place that she admired. "Hawk...I do not think I would run with you," she started, she liked her work as Knight, being able to take on different tasks and be involved in the work of the pack but the idea of being a leader held little interest to her. She wanted to be personally involved in the execution of plans, not be the one who laid them out for others to follow, "but I fully support you if you decide to run for leadership," her head tilted towards his, nose brushing his cheek, "I think our pack would be lucky to have you as one of our leaders. Conri and Reika do a good job but I think, if the chance arises, you would do well in their place."

The ghost couldn’t help a soft laugh escaping him, as Athena inquired as to how their tree climbing lesson had gone. He also couldn’t help wondering if Maxem had said anything, but in case he hadn’t, decided to spare a few of the details. ”Ah. Not too bad, I suppose. I mean, I made it out fine but it’s not something I’ll be doing regularly. I’m definitely not built for those things, as you know.” He managed a little smile with the joke at his own expense, but it was fine, and it was true.
That skill was better left to Maxem, or other, more agile wolves, anyway. Maybe someday he’d try it again on his own, because he could still see there being a certain tactical advantage to having developed the skill at least a little bit. Such a thing would not come any time soon.
It was perhaps just a little bit of a disappointment to hear Athena wouldn’t want to share the leadership role, but not unexpected. And if he was being completely honest, it wasn’t something he really wanted to do either. He’d have rather just been able to carry on as a Knight, and focus on other things. But he couldn’t deny the calling.
What mattered was her support, though. If he chose to pursue this, he had that, at least. The ghost bowed his head, accepting the gesture of affirmation, taking the next few spoken words to heart. ”Thank you, Athena. That… that means a lot. Coming from you.”
Now, more than ever. ”How did I get so lucky, with you?” the ghost mused aloud. ”You’re everything I could’ve ever hoped for, and then some..”

But you see, it's not me Athena laughed a little as Hawk gave his statement about his climbing experience. "I don't think I could do something like that either." She laughed softly, nudging his cheek with her nose. "The less you climb the less I'll have to worry about taking care of you if you get hurt." She added, lips curling up in a smile. She always tended to Maxem when he got hurt and definitely would not hesitate to help Hawk if something were to happen when the two of them went goofing around but knowing he wouldn't be scaling the trees in the future did help ease her thoughts.
She hoped she didn't offended him or discourage him when she said she wasn't interested in taking on a leadership role. She wanted him to follow his calling and wouldn't be able to live with herself if he gave it up for her. Her smile softened when he told her what she said meant a lot, feeling her heart warm that he valued her that much, making her feel like she was worth his time and affection. Even with all he had done for her and his declaration the little voice in her head whispered that she wasn't good enough for it, wasn't worthy in the slightest bit.
"You? Lucky?" She looked over at him, feeling her heart skip over itself, "I think I'm the lucky one." She told him, her chest tightening when she realized what else he said, finding it hard to believe but at the same time it was something that she had always hoped to hear. She leaned in and nuzzled her face into the white fur of Hawk's neck, suddenly feeling an overwhelming shyness take over her.

Athena, evidently, was not the type to do much climbing either. She didn’t really strike him as the sort, anyway, to do it for fun. And though the comment was made in jest, the less he tried of it, the less she’d actually have to worry about him getting injured.
The ghost laughed a bit at that. ”I certainly wouldn’t want to worry you too much. My cave exploring is.. probably enough,” the knight spoke. Though he’d not had any bad incidents yet, he also hadn’t had much luck finding anything good, either. ”There would be a certain tactical advantage to learning just a little bit about how to climb, though,” Hawk mused aloud, unable to help himself. Often he still found himself trying to come up with a way Maxem’s skill could be put to use.
This wasn’t the time or place he wanted to put too much consideration into that, though. Athena’s warm touch and embrace distracted from that anyway, and was something the ghost leant into, gently resting his chin across the crown of her head as she pressed into his neck. She considered herself the lucky one, it seemed. A sentiment that was both heartwarming and yet a bit saddening.
But mostly the first. ”Maybe we both are, in our own ways.” Once more, if it were possible, he might’ve been content to remain in this very moment forever. Though it was disappointing they could not, Hawk still looked forward to all of the good things that would be coming in the future months.
